What is Naturesorb?
Naturesorb is a heat-treated sphagnum peat moss that provides a uniquely effective way
to protect the environment from hydrocarbon and chemical spills. The material is highly
absorbent and rapidly mops up leaked oils and other contaminants on contact.
It differs from conventional cleaning materials because it fully absorbs hydrocarbon spills into its cell voids so that the pollutant is totally encapsulated within the structure of the moss. Correctly applied to an oil spill – on land or water – Naturesorb cleans up 100%.
Once contained within the peat moss, the oil contaminant biodegrades and will not be released from the moss, even under considerable pressure. This means that used Naturesorb can be safely disposed of in a landfill. The high calorific value of Naturesorb filled with hydrocarbon waste makes is an excellent fuel for energy recycling through incineration.
Sphagnum moss is a renewable resource and is harvested in harmony with nature.

Peat moss’s environmental benefit as a hydrocarbon absorbant holds great potential for changing the way the world deals with hazardous waste and spills. Naturesorb can greatly reduce the risk of damage to the environment resulting from oil spills in water as well as on land. When cleaning a spill it is very important to select the most appropriate material for the intended application at the most cost-effective price. All too often, an absorbent is chosen solely on the basis of cost–per-bag without calculating the total clean-up cost based on absorption ratio, time, labour costs and cost disposal. Naturesorb is inexpensive, easy to apply, safe to use and easy to dispose of with up to 20 times less landfill volume compared to current standard adsorbents.
How Does Naturesorb Work?
Peat moss is made up of small capillaries whose cells are full of water in their natural state. When Naturesorb peat moss is processed using a proprietary dehydration method, the peat becomes both oleophilic and hydrophobic, in other words, it has a high capacity for absorbing oils through capillary action but at the same time, it repels water. Naturesorb cells contain humic acid which acts as a catalyst within the cell, triggering the process that breaks down hydrocarbons into carbons and water that can safely be re-assimilated into the environment.
What does Naturesorb absorb?
Naturesob absorbs hydrocarbon derivatives as well as a wide range of chemicals and solvents. It is a lab-tested and field-proven product that isvery economical and efficient in use. It will absorb, on contact, several families of products with no risk of chemical interactions. Naturesorb will outperform any other absorbent on water because it can float for weeks, absorbing hydrocarbons and remaining hydrophobic.
Naturesorb absorbs:
Naturesorb is one of today’s preferred absorbents for spill cleanups and remediation projects by professionals throughout the world.
Where is Naturesorb used?
Petroleum industry
Naturesorb can be sprayed on to spills on land or
water and can be used to filter oil-contaminated
water in bunds and lagoons. It can handle anything
from major spills at point of extraction to minor
fuel leaks on a service station forecourt.
Airports
Naturesorb is ideal for an environment where it is
essential to clean up any fuel spill immediately and
completely. Simply sprinkled on leaked jet fuel,
Naturesorb will totally absorb the spill within seconds.
Emergency response
Front line workers like firemen can quickly and
easily use Naturesorb to neutralize leaked fuels at
the scene of an accident. Environmental clean-up
specialists can use Naturesorb to deal effectively
with all kinds of hydrocarbon spills from floating oil
slicks to clotted coastlines and oil-soaked wildlife.
Ports, harbors and marinas
Everywhere there is motorized marine transport
there will inevitably be oil and fuel contamination.
Strategically placed stocks of Naturesorb will ensure
that any spill, on land or water, can be quickly
dealt with before it becomes an environmental
hazard.
Road transport
No truck should be without a small bag of Naturesorb
to mop up any fuel spill immediately and
completely.
Manufacturing industry and mining
Naturesorb is a new weapon in the HSE armory to
ensure that the workplace is kept clean and hazard-
free in the event of spills – whatever they are:
sulfuric acid, oil-based paints, vegetable or fish
oils, blood, animal fats. In mining, Naturesorb can
be used to filter effluent and remove cyanide and
heavy metals.
Land remediation
Soil contaminated with hydrocarbons can be returned
to its clean, natural state by digging in
Naturesorb which absorbs the contaminants so
that they can be safely removed and disposed of.
In this way, the value of low grade sites can be
significantly increased without a heavy investment
in conventional soil cleaning techniques.
