The Benefits of Naturesorb
Naturesorb’s unique combination of properties gives the material
extensive benefits in use:
Multipurpose
Naturesorb can absorb an extensive range of contaminants from
Acetone to Xylenes. It can also be used to filter heavy metal contamination
from water and soil and is ideally suited to upgrading
brownfield sites. Its filtering properties mean that it can be used to
separate oil contaminants from water. Naturesorb is available in different
configurations of booms and pads to contain spills on land
and water.
Highly absorbent
Naturesorb’s barrel cell structure and oleophilic properties mean that
a kilo of material can absorb eight litres of oil. The oil will be fully
contained within the cells of the moss – as opposed to other cleanup
media where oil adheres to the outside of the material (e.g. polypropylene,
sand, clay particles or sawdust).
Hydrophobic
Because Naturesorb repels water, its oil-absorbing properties are in
no way compromised when it is used on water or in wet weather
conditions.
Biodegradable
Naturesorb effectively accelerates the breakdown of the pollutants it
contains as part of its own biodegradation process.
Fast-working
A 22 kg bag of Naturesorb can mop up 200 litres of 120 weight oil
within seconds. Even viscous materials can be absorbed within minutes.
Non-leaching
Contaminants are safely contained within Naturesorb even at pressures
up to 4 bars. This means that used Naturesorb can be safely
disposed of in a landfill since contaminants will not be released back
into the environment.
Non-toxic and inert
A wholly natural material with no additives, Naturesorb can not provoke
hazardous reactions when in contact with manufactured
chemicals.
Vapor suppressant
When used to cover up flammable liquids Naturesorb will absorb up
to 90% of the explosive vapors, effectively suppressing the risk of
explosion and fire.
Effective filtration
When oil-contaminated water is filtered through Naturesorb the pollutants
are absorbed by the peat moss, leaving clear, clean water.
Clean and non-abrasive
Naturesorb does not give off any silica dust and has a factor of one
on the Moh’s hardness scale which compares with seven for sand.
Cost-effective
Because Naturesorb simplifies any clean up process, reducing the
need for labor and transportation and because a little goes a long
way, it can be five times less expensive to clean up spills using
Naturesorb compared to other types of commonly used materials.
High energy value
Naturesorb can be safely incinerated leaving minimal ash residue
(2% of original volume).
Sustainable
Naturesorb is harvested from a 120 million acre area of sphagnum
wetlands in Eastern Canada. The site grows 50 million tons of peat
moss a year of which only 0.02% is harvested for agricultural and
industrial use.
